| Review and Re-Assessment of TCI Protected Areas System Study |
Land use in TCI, as elsewhere, is managed according to a strategic framework where different areas are designated for different uses – areas that are designated for essential infrastructure, commercial development, housing, tourism infrastructure, amenity areas, and physical protection. The PAS specifically designates areas for the management of the natural features and assets that they contain.
Only in a very few instances are people discouraged or stopped from accessing these sites – in most instances people are encouraged to visit and actively enjoy the natural beauty of these sites. And it is this feature of the PAS that underpins much of the very successful TCI tourism industry. In 2004 173,000 people made the journey to TCI, most of these (94%) heading for the island of Providenciales – drawn by the Tourism Board’s promotional tag-line of “Beautiful by Nature”. A warm temperature, mild climate, green landscape, clean environment, golden beaches, blue lagoons, and brilliant coral reefs – “Beautiful by Nature”, but a fragile beauty that can be all too easily disrupted by inappropriate use or development. Effective management of these assets is crucial to the future wellbeing of the islands’ economy, and at the core of this management is the Protected Area System.
